Why do we love Omegas in our Organic Face Oils?

Omegas are essential and non essential fatty acids. Essential fatty acids we can synthesize from foods, non essential our bodies can make. There are three main Omegas known as Alpha Linoleic acid, Linolenic Acid and Oleic Acid. These acids are really important to consider when choosing an organic face oil.

Alpha Linoleic Acid is also known as Omega 3. It is used in skincare because it is lightweight, anti inflammatory, age preventative, can help to balance sebum production, maintains moisture in the skin, improves elasticity and protects against UV damage.

Botanical oils rich Alpha Linoleic Acid include:

  • Sacha Inchi which has the highest content of polyunsaturated fatty acids among all plant based oils
  • Sea Buckthorn

Meru our luxury face oil is rich in Alpha linoleic and Linoleic acid making it fantastic for all types of skin and skin conditions. It is also present our organic face oil Aceso.

Linoleic Acid is also known as Omega 6, is used in skincare because its is good for the structural integrity of the skin, it unclogs the pores, reduces breakouts, treats scaliness in eczema. Studies have shown that people with problematic skin are often lacking in Linoleic acid so it is helpful to apply this topically is your skin is misbehaving.

Oils rich in Linoleic Acid include:

  • Cactus Oil
  • Sacha Inchi
  • Safflower
  • Rosehip

Meru, Vega and Aceso luxury organic face oils from the Botanyblend range all contain ample amount of Linoleic Acid.

Both Alpha linoleic acid and Linoleic acid are unsaturated fatty acids, they are particularly helpful in restoring the skin’s barrier function and preventing transepidermal water loss.

Oleic Acid or Omega 9 is used in skin care because of its skin softening qualities. These oils are often rich and heavy because Omega 9 in saturated fatty acid,  it is useful for dry skin.

Oils rich in Oleic acid include:

  • Apricot and Almond (Interestingly these oils are almost identical in chemical profile, meaning they have almost identical benefits.
  • This is also true for Evening Primrose and Borage oil which are also high in Oleic Acid
  • Argan
  • Camelia

Our organic face oil Vega is especially high in Oleic acid which is why it is great for dry skin, but recommended for night time use as is much heavier than other oils in our range, and studies have shown that overuse of Oleic Acid can break down the barrier function of the skin.
